If we read the gospels, we see a number of incidents when Jesus was in direct collision course with the Scribes and Pharisees, which eventually led to the trial and death of Jesus in their hands.
The conflict is over petty issues like fasting, washing of hands, healing on Sabbath, misunderstanding about the Kingdom of God and so on…… The scribes and Pharisees were majoring on minors and their mentality were set at observances of rituals (the outside-in) as a means to relating to God. Jesus on the other hand was emphasising on a personal relationship to God (the inside-out) .
Today, we still have this conflict going on; those who prefer to dwell on minors rather than the major central issue of the finished work of Jesus in relating to God. A lot of times we can digress and bog ourselves down to minor issues like : whether speaking in tongues and healings are from God or devil, whether Christians can listen to rock music or see Harry Potter, whether Christians have to tithe and so on and so forth.
For example, Jesus had this to say to the Scribes and Pharisees, for they love to major on minors. “ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone . 24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. (Matt 23:23-26KJV).
Please note that Jesus was on earth and He was still subjected to the law and He spoke of what the Law required.
Now we have entered into the new covenant, as Jesus had already died and resurrected. We are no longer under law, as Jesus was when He was still on earth. Our major is now in Christ's finished work. It is about the gospel, the message that is goodnews based on His death, burial and resurrection (see 1 Cor. 15:1-4).
Paul new the real essence or major of the new covenant, for he boldly declared : "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'The just shall live by faith'," (Rom. 1:16,17).
Religion loves to major on minor issues. Rejoice
