Deception of the ancient serpent

2 Corinthians 11(NLT)

1 I hope you will put up with a little more of my foolishness. Please bear with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride[a] to one husband—Christ.
3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.
5 But I don’t consider myself inferior in any way to these “super apostles” who teach such things. 6 I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I’m not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every possible way.

The ancient serpent in the garden of Eden that cunningly deceived Eve is still at work today with his same old tactics to deceive believers, to draw us away from the Tree of Life to the Tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Paul feared that believers, whom he presented as a pure bride to one husband- Christ be led astray from the centrality of Christ and get fixed on anything apart from the true gospel (tree of life). The devil wants us to focus on secondary issues so as to displace our primary focus on Jesus.

As believers it is a wise to cross-check ourselves with this question - what is central to our spiritual life? -----have we replaced Him and given pre-emminence to on our ministries, programs and activities, philosophy, theology, denomination, church organisation, church growth, ……… eventhough some of these things are good.

As believers, the church, we are the bride of Christ and we are only married to Christ and no one else; we are not married to our ministries, we are not married to the church, our philosophies or doctrines……

As believers, we can be more discerning and not happily put up with whatever anyone tells us, not even from these 'famous well sought after" preachers if they present a different Jesus ....or gospel.
