Romans 7:1-4 (The Message)
Torn Between One Way and Another
1-3 You shouldn't have any trouble understanding this, friends, for you know all the ins and outs of the law—how it works and how its power touches only the living. For instance, a wife is legally tied to her husband while he lives, but if he dies, she's free. If she lives with another man while her husband is living, she's obviously an adulteress. But if he dies, she is quite free to marry another man in good conscience, with no one's disapproval.
4-6So, my friends, this is something like what has taken place with you. When Christ died he took that entire rule-dominated way of life down with him and left it in the tomb, leaving you free to "marry" a resurrection life and bear "offspring" of faith for God. For as long as we lived that old way of life, doing whatever we felt we could get away with, sin was calling most of the shots as the old law code hemmed us in. And this made us all the more rebellious. In the end, all we had to show for it was miscarriages and stillbirths. But now that we're no longer shackled to that domineering mate of sin, and out from under all those oppressive regulations and fine print, we're free to live a new life in the freedom of God.
This husband called "Mr Law" is always around you unless you escape from him. If Mr Law dies, well and good and you can marry another husband; if he does not die and you run away to marry another husband, you commit adultery. The fact is that Mr Law is always alive and you have to live with his demands of never good enough with all your good deeds to please him. So you are pressed in between the rock and a hard place.
Jesus knew this and in his amazing divine plan, He makes you dead instead of Mr Law so that you can get Mr Law out of your life. So, Jesus died on your behalf instead so that when you identify with Jesus, you are also dead on that cross, you are also crucified with Jesus on the cross. So when Mr Law sees that, he knows you are dead and he has no claims over that marriage relationship anymore.
But that is not all. Jesus plans that when you identify with that death, you also resurrect with Him. So you are born again and now you have Jesus as your new husband - the best husband you can ever have which is beyond description with our limited vocabulary.
So ask yourself why on earth would you like to go back to Mr Law again after having tasted the goodness of that marriage relationship with Jesus Christ. This is unthinkable. Who is this Jesus Christ -...truth and grace came through Jesus Christ(Jn 1:17)
Why on earth that once you are married to Jesus Christ, you want to have Mr Law with you also - this is spiritual adultery.
