The "paradox" of the law.

For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. How we thank God, who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord! (1Cor 15:56-57 New Living translation)
Rules do not keep a person from sinning, on the contrary, they give power to sin. A paradox.

Romans 5:20-21 The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life throuugh Jesus Christ our Lord.

A better explanation of Rom 5:20-21 from Message bible :

All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn't, and doesn't have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgivensess we call grace. When it's sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that's the end of it. Grace because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life - a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.

Law came so that sin might increase! A paradox.

If we want to walk closely with God by thinking that we can help ourselves with a set of guidelines, rules and regulations or say new year resolutions, the bad news is that we are doomed to fail because of this "paradox".
