1Cor 4:1-4 The Message bible : Don't imagine us leaders to be something we aren't. We are servants of Christ, not his masters. We are guides into God's most sublime secrets, not security guards posted to protect them. The requirements for a good guide are reliability and accurate knowledge. It matters very little to me what you think of me, even less where I rank in popular opinion. I don't even rank myself. Comparisons in these matters are pointless. I'm not aware of anything that would disqualify me from being a good guide for you, but that doesn't mean much. The Master makes that judgement.
Paul's insight on leadership is worth pondering. Leadership has remote resemblance to that of a security guard. God is more than able to take care of His business and He does it very well. In fact, God does not need our help. We need Him instead.
When we know that God qualifies us, we will know we are secure in Him. Otherwise, we will continue to run around trying to qualify ourselves/become acceptable to God by being busy doing "good" things. When we are secure in Him, we are able to enter into His rest. We will not venture into comparing/competing with one another endlessly. Once we are secure in Him, we can esteem others as better than us, we can easily lower ourselves to a servant position to serve without feeling insecure as we know our real birth-right position in Christ. Our security in Him enables us to freely release people to be what God wants them to be.
